Why your dispensary isn't showing up on Google
A dispensary missing from Google's map results is almost always an unverified or inconsistent Google Business Profile, not a website problem. Those three pins are the result that matters for a store, and only one of the four causes below is outside your control.
If your dispensary is not in Google's three map results, you are not on page two. For a store, you are effectively closed. Most of the causes are things you can fix, and the biggest one is usually not the one owners blame.
What does Google actually show for a dispensary search?
Before the reasons, the measurement. We ran "cannabis dispensaries near me" in five US cities in September 2026 and recorded what Google returned:
Is your Google Business Profile verified and complete?
This is the most common cause and the cheapest to fix. An unverified Google Business Profile will not appear in the map results at all, no matter how good your site is. An unverified profile is also a profile anyone can suggest edits to.
Verify it, then fill every field. Google uses the profile for the map result and pulls the same details into what it shows above the map. Hours, category, attributes and photos all feed the same decision.
Does your name, address and phone number match everywhere?
If your site says one phone number and your profile says another, Google has to decide which is true, and it does that by looking for agreement. Where sources disagree, the result gets suppressed rather than resolved.
Pick one form and make it identical everywhere: your site, your profile, your menu platforms, your social profiles and any directory that lists you. Street against Street, Suite against Suite. This is the fix owners most often skip because it looks like housekeeping.
Why does a shop closer to the searcher outrank you?
Google's map results are ranked on three things: proximity to the searcher, prominence, and relevance. Proximity is the distance between the searcher and you, and no amount of optimisation moves a physical building. Google states this directly in its own guidance on how local ranking works.
This matters because it explains results that otherwise look random. A shop two minutes away will outrank you for a searcher standing outside it, and you will outrank them for a searcher outside yours. What you can control is prominence and relevance, and between them they decide the results you are eligible for at all.

Can Google read your menu and hours?
The last cause is technical and it is where cannabis sites fail more than most. Menu platforms, appointment widgets and state-compliance banners are frequently rendered in JavaScript, which means the text exists for a visitor and not for a crawler.
The test is simple. Load your page and view the raw source, not the rendered page. If your menu, your hours or your neighbourhood are not in that source, Google is not reading them either.
What should you fix first?
Work down this list. The first two are free and they resolve most missing map results. The last two are slower and they decide how far you can climb once you are on the map.
- Claim and verify your Google Business Profile. Nothing below matters until this is done.
- Make name, address and phone identical across your site, your profile and every listing that shows them.
- Put your menu, hours and neighbourhood in plain HTML so a crawler reads the same facts a customer does.
- Publish pages that answer the questions your customers ask. The comparison format is the one AI engines cite most, and it is the format you can own without competing with Leafly for a directory listing.
How do you know whether it is working?
Measure the two things separately, because they move on different clocks. The profile affects the map, and a change there can show within days. Content affects ranked results, and a new page usually needs two to four months before it holds a position.
Record your position for the searches that matter to you once a month, in a fixed list, so a change means something moved rather than that you looked differently. A list that changes between measurements cannot tell you anything.
Is dispensary SEO the same as AI visibility?
For a dispensary near a customer, largely yes, and the measurement above is the reason. Google returned no AI answer for nearby dispensary searches in five cities, so there is no AI shortlist to compete for at that moment. Being one of the three map pins is the whole job.
AI does matter for the questions asked before that moment: what to look for, how to choose, what the differences are. Those are answered in text, and the pages that get quoted are the ones written to be quoted.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my dispensary not show up on Google Maps?
Almost always one of three things: the Google Business Profile is unverified or incomplete, the name, address and phone number differ between your site and your profile, or the business sits outside the area Google treats as one market. Google ranks the three map results on proximity, prominence and relevance, and proximity you cannot change. The other two you can.
Do I need SEO if I run a dispensary?
You need it more than most businesses do. Google Ads prohibits advertising substances that induce highs, so paid search is closed to you. Organic search and the Map Pack are the channels you are allowed to win, which makes them the whole acquisition channel rather than one option among several.
How long does it take to rank a dispensary on Google?
A profile fix can move the Map Pack in days to weeks. A new page usually takes two to four months before it holds a position, and the pages we watched on a 27-day-old domain had not been crawled at all. Treat profile and content as separate timelines instead of one.
Does AI recommend dispensaries?
For nearby searches, no. We ran "cannabis dispensaries near me" in five US cities and Google returned no AI answer in any of them. It showed three map pins and put Yelp, Leafly and Reddit underneath. So for a store, the fight is the Map Pack, not the AI answer.
What is the fastest thing I can fix myself?
Claim and verify the Google Business Profile, then make the name, address and phone number on your site match it character for character. That is free, takes under an hour, and inconsistency there is the single most common cause of a missing map result.
